HOW TO PREVENT GLUE DROPS

Updated: Jun 18

How and why do glue drops happen? There could be a million reasons it's happening, but good news is - there's also a million ways to fix it! Don't feel disheartened or defeated if it's happening to you, because it happens to everyone. And 9 times out of 10, it's an environmental issue or some other factor is causing it - not necessarily your skill set!

Now, there's a difference between glue drops and left over bases. Glue drops remain for different reasons to the left over bases. So how can you tell the difference?

Left over bases will look exactly like that, a square-like shaped base remaining on the NL (natural lash) with no individual lashes attached. This usually happens when the bondage is too strong or the NL can't withhold the weight of the extension. Whereas, glue drops remain due to enviromential, application and aftercare issues.

First, let's talk about glue drops. If it's a one off thing and isn't happening to every client, then you know it's either environmental or the aftercare causing the issue. So let's run over a few variables. This could mean the client is pulling, picking or twisting their lashes - causing the bondage to break up between the fan and the adhesive. If they have poor aftercare, same thing - the bondage will break apart due to the build up of sweat and oils! It could also be due to the clients hair - if it's dry, use a primer otherwise the fan will fall off way before the adhesive - leaving, you guessed it - glue drops!

Now for left over bases. This happens for one of very few reasons. The main reason being the extension itself is too heavy, thick or long for the NL, causing it to break apart and snap at the base. A NL can only hold so much weight, if not - the extension and NL will literally snap off - leaving you with a square like base and short lashes. Left over bases can also be caused by plucking and twisting the lash - it's essentially removing each individsul lash one by one until only the base remains. And because the adhesive is strong (as it should be) the base remains.

Again, if it's a one off - it's easier to try and pin point the issue by doing trial and error. But if it's an - everyone's having an issue - sort of thing, then you must take accountability and make changes where needed. This could be by simply adjusting the room temperature multiple times a day - once in the morning, mid day and in the afternoon. The weather is constantly changing so you must do the same! It could be controlling your "dipping techniques". If you're dipping in too little. the fan itself will pop off the natural lash. If you do too much, it will not only clump together but cause for left over bases or glue drops. And of course, if the room is too cool or too dry, the bondage will cause poor bondage which again, leaves you with these issues.

Trial and error is the best way to eliminate out any factors causing you issues. If you're not sure where to start - you have to break it down! Make sure you know your customers well and your attention to detail is OUT OF THIS WORLD.

As yourself things like:
  • Who has oily skin?
  • Who comes in for early morning apps?
  • Who has weak lashes?
  • Who gets fuller volumes?
  • How much am I dipping in?
  • Who exercises regularly

Once you have these questions answered (write down a list if you need) then the process of elimination will be easy! Figure out if it's reoccurring or a one off issue and go from there! If you need to move clients from the morning to afternoon - try that! If you need to start priming more - give that a go! You can also try dropping down in volume, diameter or length to see if that makes a difference.

Either way, I'd always recommend getting the room settings right first, making sure your dipping and application techniques are perfect and the diameter, thickness and volume your using is suitable!

Sometimes it's inevitable, no matter what you do! The glue drops just won't go away so next best thing - offer a removal and start fresh.

P.S - Don't EVER place an extension on top of the left over glue residue! Instead, use your tweezers and the "pinch" method to gently glide them up and off the natural lash! If you're having issues - use a little bit of remover and place directly on the glue drop, leave for 5 minutes and wipe away!

But don't stress, there's always a resolution to every issue - no matter what! WE BELIEVE IN YOU AND KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!

Love always,
